NEW YORK -- Sophomore Lauren Herring advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships with a 6-1, 6-1 win over UNC's Whitney Kay Thursday.
"Lauren bounced back great from doubles and got a big win," said assistant coach Drake Bernstein. "As a team, there are definitely some things that we can work on tomorrow in both singles and doubles, and we're looking forward to getting back out on the courts. Tomorrow is a new day."
Herring is ranked 53rd in the country. The win is her 16th of the fall and 12th in a row. Kay was tabbed the 5th best newcomer in the country heading into the fall.
Also in singles, 37th-ranked Maho Kowase fell to 10th-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama, 6-0, 6-1 in her first round match. Kowase will continue play in the consolation draw tomorrow.
Earlier in the day in doubles action, Herring and partner Kate Fuller, ranked 30th nationally, lost to Pepperdine's seventh-ranked duo of Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara, 8-3. The loss drops the pair's fall record to 12-4. They will play tomorrow in the consolation doubles draw.
