RICHMOND, Ky. -- Senior forward Markeith Cummings scored a season-high 31 points, including 20 in the second, but in the end it was not enough as Radford withstood a second-half comeback attempt by Kennesaw State to register a 67-58 victory during the second day of the Comfort Suites Invitational Saturday at McBrayer Arena in Richmond, Ky.
Cummings came within a point of equaling his career-high as he went 10 for 20 from the field, including 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
R.J. Price led Radford (2-2) with 19 points while Javonte Green pitched in with 16 points.
Kennesaw State (1-3) trailed 27-23 at halftime and, after a slow start to begin the second half, found itself behind by 10 points after Radford opened the period with a 10-4 run to take a 37-27 lead with 17:47 remaining.
That was when Cummings took over, scoring the game's next six points and eight of 10 to help the Owls' cut the deficit to four points at 39-35 with 13:11 to play. A basket by sophomore guard Delbert Love at the 12:33 mark put Kennesaw State within two at 39-37.
The Owls kept the game within five points and took a brief lead 49-48 on a pair of Cummings' free throws with 6:44 remaining.
However, the Highlanders responded with a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead following a three-pointer by Kyle Noreen with 4:49 to play and would never allow Kennesaw State to get closer than three points as they closed out the game with a 19-9 run.
The Owls had a tough first half offensively as they committed 14 of their season-high 20 turnovers in the first half. While Kennesaw State took better care of the ball in the second half, it had breakdowns on the defensive end, allowing Radford to shoot at 60 percent (12-for-20) from the field over the final 20 minutes.
With his 31 points, Cummings increased his career total to 1,680 and is within four of surpassing Herman Smith (1986-90) to become Kennesaw State's all-time scoring leader. Smith concluded his career with 1,683 points.
Kennesaw State concludes tournament play on Sunday (Nov. 18) when it faces Towson beginning at 7 p.m.
