The Georgia Dome will look different for this Final Four than the one played there in 2007.
ATLANTA, Ga. - - The college basketball doubleheader at the Georgia Dome Tuesday night was just one of many ways the facility is prepping for the 2013 Final Four.
Last spring's NCAA regional and the Champions Classic on Tuesday gave the Georgia Dome staff game scenarios much like the Final Four. Basketball is different from football when it comes to clock procedures, fan traffic and many other details, so Falcons games aren't the same logistics.
But in other ways the NCAA big dance will be so big, the challenges will be new. All the lower level red seats in the Dome will be removed, and temparary seating angled toward "midfield" will be installed. The basketball court will sit where the midfield Falcons logo is for football.
The court will be raised about 4 feet above the "playing field". Jason Kirksey of Georgia Dome communications says it's been done elsewhere for this event, but not in the Dome.
In addition to the Dome, the World Congress Center and Centennial Olympic Park will be utilized for NCAA events. For the first time, the Division 2 and Division 3 national championships will be held in the same city the same time as the Division 1 Final Four. The other games will be staged at Philips Arena.
