Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Ryan Broekhoff drilled a 3-pointer as time
expired to lift the top-seed Valparaiso Crusaders to a thrilling 70-69 win
over the fourth-seed Green Bay Phoenix in the semifinals of the Horizon League
Tournament at the ARC.
Broekhoff finished with 25 points, Kevin Van Wijk had 17 and Matt Kenney
tallied 14 for Valparaiso (25-7) which will battle third-seed Wright State for
the conference title on Tuesday.
Keifer Sykes dropped in 31 points and Alec Brown totaled 15 for Green Bay
Valparaiso shot 45.8 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. Green
Bay hit on 40.7 percent from the field and was held scoreless from 3-point
range. The Crusaders led 29-23 at intermission.
Sykes scored 21 points in the final 20 minutes as the Phoenix rallied behind
a 65.4 percent shooting effort. Valparaiso kept pace by shooting 54.2 percent
from the field. The Phoenix had a 68-64 lead with 13 seconds remaining but
Kenney nailed a 3-pointer to pull the Crusaders to within one. Brown split a
pair of free-throws on the other end. Van Wijk collected the rebound on the
miss and got the ball to Broekhoff who went down the floor and after fumbling
the ball was able to sink the game-winner.
Valparaiso shot an even 50 percent from the field in the contest and nailed
eight shots from beyond the arc.
