FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- With a game-high 17 points, senior Shavon Caldwell led the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers to a 75-69 road win over Fort Valley State University in their season finale Thursday.
Clark Atlanta held a five-point lead at the half behind the play of Erika Sumpter who recorded eight of her 14 total points in the first period. In the second half, Fort Valley took its only lead, 56-55, with 7:39 left as the game remained close until the 1:30 mark when the Lady Panthers went on an 8-3 run to end the game.
Sumpter finished with her seventh double-double on the season while pulling down 11 rebounds along with La'Quisha Lewis who also added 13 points. Guard Conisha Hicks chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Panthers. As a team, CAU shot 45 percent from the field and trailed the Lady Wildcats (12-12, SIAC 8-7) slightly in rebounds 51 to 44.
With the win, the Lady Panthers finished the regular season 16-10 overall and 12-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division where they are currently in second place. The SIAC basketball tournament begins Monday, Feb. 25 through March 2, at Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.
