AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Despite an impressive 20-point run to end the game, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers' colossal efforts fell short in an 89-86 loss to Paine College on the road Thursday.
CAU's sharp shooting freshman James Arnold was impressive from the field with 16 of his game-high 24 pointsoff the bench during a 39-19 run that trimmed the Lions' 21-point second-half lead to one point, 87-86, with 10 seconds remaining in the contest. But after two Paine free throws, the Panthers could not get a shot off as time expired.
Paine (12-12, SIAC 10-6) held a 45-37 advantage at the half while both teams shot 50 percent from the floor in the period. On the glass, it was Clark Atlanta with a 39 to 36 edge in the game led by Glyndelle Poole's game-high 11 rebounds followed by Dwayne Bingham with 10. Other double-digit scorers for the Panthers were Jarrel Joye who finished with 17 points and four assists along with Kevin James and Poole who both chipped in 13.
With the loss, the Panthers (4-18, SIAC 3-11) have dropped their last three contests as they head to Benedict to face the second-ranked Tigers of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (SIAC) East Division Saturday, Feb. 16th, at 3 p.m.
