Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Robert Covington scored a game-high 25
points, leading four players in double figures, as the Tennessee State Tigers
captured an 80-69 win over the Belmont Bruins in Ohio Valley Conference action
at the Gentry Center.
Kellen Thornton recorded a double-double consisting of 18 points and a game-
high 10 rebounds, followed by Patrick Miller and Jordan Cyphers with 15 and 10
points, respectively, as the Tigers (15-11, 9-4 OVC) won for the third time in
the last four outings.
The Bruins (20-6, 11-2) were paced by Kerron Johnson and Trevor Noack with 16
points apiece, while JJ Mann tacked on 13 points and six rebounds, but was
also guilty of five of the unit's 16 turnovers. Ian Clark and Blake Jenkins
pitched in with 10 points apiece as the team lost for the second time in three
Belmont shot just 37.5 percent from the floor in the first half, including 2-
of-12 behind the 3-point line, but the squad still only trailed by three
points at the break, 31-28.
In the second half the Bruins knocked down 51.5 percent from the floor, but
again struggled on the perimeter (3-of-14) as the Tigers pulled away for the
Tennessee State turned the ball over 18 times on the night, but the team made
up for it by outscoring the visitors, 21-6 at the free-throw line.
