Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Darien Brothers scored 15 points for the
Richmond Spiders who earned a 64-61 victory over the Rhode Island Rams in an
Atlantic 10 showdown at the Robins Center.
Brothers was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe for the Spiders (11-5,
1-0 A-10), who have won two in a row now after a three-game losing streak.
Greg Robbins and Deion Taylor added 11 points each while Robbins also pulled
down a team-high seven rebounds.
Xavier Munford tallied 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting for the Rams (5-9, 0-1),
who have lost two of their last three. Mike Aaman recorded a double-double,
off the bench with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Nikola Malesevic helped on the
glass by grabbing nine rebounds.
Richmond led 38-28 at halftime after shooting 48.1 percent from the floor in
the first half.
Rhode Island outscored the Spiders, 33-26, in the second half but despite its
19-4 run to end the game, and cutting the deficit to just one point with 30
seconds remaining. However, Richmond hit four of its last six free-throw
attempts to seal the win. Munford was able to hit a layup with three seconds
left to make it a three-point game but the Rams ran out of time.
The Rams shot 38.6 percent from the field throughout the game while Richmond
knocked down 42 percent of its shots from the floor.
