ATLANTA -- With 15 second-half points including 12 from behind the arc, Clark Atlanta University freshman guard James Arnold led the Panthers to a 77-72 win over Lane College at Epps Gymnasium Saturday.
After trailing 37-29 at the half, the Panthers ignited an offensive explosion in the second period and orchestrated to a 29-19 run with 2:08 remaining to take the lead capped by a thunderous two-handed dunk by Kevin James for two of his seven points. Driven by momentum, CAU held on to the lead despite a frantic comeback attempt by the Dragons. In the period, Clark Atlanta shot 63 percent (5-of-8) from behind the three-point line and hit 17-of-26 free throws.
Arnold, who hit 4-of-5 three-pointers and 3-of-4 free throw attempts, topped the Panthers with a team-high 19 points along with Jerrel Joye while Glyndelle Poole poured in 15 off the bench and Dwayne Bingham pulled down 10 rebounds. Leading the way for the Dragons were Ashton Patton who recorded a game-high 20 points and Shoquan Stevens added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Panthers (2-8, SIAC 1-1) will host Kentucky State University Monday, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m., in Epps Gymnasium before their three-game road swing.
