NCAA Game Summary - San Francisco at Santa Clara

Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Foster poured in 21 points to lift the Santa Clara Broncos to a 74-69 decision over the San Francisco Dons in a West Coast Conference opener for both sides at the Leavey Center.

Marc Trasolini recorded a double-double for Santa Clara (12-3, 1-0 WCC) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Raymond Cowels III chipped in 13 points, and Evan Roquemore came off the bench to provide 12 points and eight assists. Yannick Atanga did a great job of cleaning the glass as he pulled down 13 boards to help the Broncos win their for the seventh time in eight outings.

Cole Dickerson paced San Francisco (7-7, 0-1) with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cody Doolin scored 16 points and dealt out eight assists while Avry Holmes tallied 12 points for the Dons, who saw their brief two-game winning stream come to an end.

The Broncos did a good job of distributing in the early going and assisted nine of their 17 makes from the floor, where they converted 45.9 percent of their attempts, to take a 39-28 lead into halftime. San Francisco made 41.4 percent of its field goal attempts, but went into the break trailing after it committed nine turnovers during the opening 20 minutes.

The Dons heated up after the intermission to hit 53.8 percent of their field goal attempts including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Santa Clara went cold and knocked down only 39.1 percent of its shots from the field, which allowed the visitors to put together a late rally. Tim Derksen drained a 3-pointer with 1:26 left in regulation to narrow the deficit to 67-65, but Trasolini dropped a layup through the cylinder on the next possession to extend the Broncos lead to four. Doolin made a layup of his own on the next play to make it a one possession game once again, however Santa Clara answered with a pair of free throws by Roquemore that put the contest out of reach for good.

Santa Clara, which finished last season with an 0-16 record in WCC action, used a 42-33 edge in the rebounding battle to power the league win.
