Stratham, NH (Sports Network) - Andy Hyeon Bo Shim defeated Jim Liu 4 & 3 to
win the 2012 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Golf Club of New England.
Shim, the 43rd seeded player in the bracket, recorded quite the comeback on
Saturday, having been down by five holes after the first 18 holes. Liu, the
top seed and the 2010 champion, was unable to get anything going in the last
15 holes, though.
Liu had been the youngest winner in 2010 when he won as a 14-year-old, but
couldn't repeat the feat. For awhile, however, it looked as though he would.
Shim trailed by five as they began the last half of the final, but won five of
the first seven holes to square the match. Liu never won any of the last 16
holes, and Shim went up for good with a par at the eighth.
It was the second of four straight holes won by Shim, who birdied the 10th to
go ahead by three. A par at the 12th put him up by four, and he was able to
halve the next three holes to give him an insurmountable lead.
