NORCROSS, Ga -- Gwinnett County Police released surveillance video in hopes that it would help them catch a predator who committed an unspeakable crime.
A suspect described as 6-feet tall, weighing anywhere from 250 to 350 pounds, beat up and robbed a frail 74 year old man in a bathroom of a fast food restaurant.
Gwinnett County Police Corporal Jake Smith said the suspect preyed on his victim. "Our suspect was eating at a table very close to the bathroom door and we think he was just probably lying in wait for a target of opportunity," he said.
It happened at the McDonalds on Indian Trail Road in Norcross at the height of the lunch hour. When the 74 year old man walked into the bathroom, the suspect immediately followed him in.
Corporal Smith said the suspect tried to take the victim's wallet out of his back pocket. "He (victim) turned around and said 'hey, what are you doing?' at which point the suspect physically attacked him," he said.
Police said the suspect knocked the man to the floor and took his wallet. "The victim was knocked to the ground and his head bounced off something," Smith said. "He had a laceration to the head and suffered a fractured back as well."
The suspect calmly walked out of the bathroom, picked up his tray, dumped it in a garbage can and walked out of the McDonalds.
There was only $35 in the man's wallet. He was taken to the hospital and admitted.
Employees told police they have seen the suspect in the restaurant before but they don't know his name. They are asking anyone who recognizes him to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
