ATHENS, Ga. -- A teenager was killed after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Athens Saturday evening.

Tobias Antwon Smith, 19, was struck by a Mazda 3 at around 7:20 p.m. on Winterville Road near Hancock Road.

Athens-Clarke County Police Sgt. Kenneth Watkins said in a release that Smith had no reflectors or lights on his bike. The driver who hit him did not see him right away and tried to swerve, but could not avoid colliding with Smith's bike.

Smith was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Watkins said the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
