ATLANTA -- A 21-year-old man will spend 30 years in jail after pleading guilty to shooting an Atlanta police officer.

Cameron Maddox was convicted of using a stolen .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun to shoot at a car with four people inside on Moreland Avenue in Atlanta's Little Five Points neighborhood on Mar. 22, 2012.

Maddox also shot Officer Dexter Toomer, hitting him in the leg. Toomer survived and was released from the hospital the following day.

"Maddox's goal was to kill and terrorize," DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said. "Luckily, Officer Toomer was not fatally wounded, and the additional victims were not struck by the reckless actions of Maddox."

Maddox pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 50 years -- 30 behind bars and 20 on probation.
