Angelo Taylor shows off one of his Olympic medals

ATLANTA - One of Atlanta's most decorated Olympic medalists is asking for the public's help in recovering two of his five Olympic medals, which were stolen from his car overnight Thursday night.

The athlete says he only wants someone to step up and do the right thing.

Taylor says soon after he woke up Friday, he noticed his SUV had been broken into. He then realized his laptop, some clothes and two of his Olympic medals were gone.

Taylor is from Decatur, lives there now, and trained so many years in the same neighborhood. He says he cannot believe someone would do this and all he wants is for them to do the right thing and return his medals.

"You see something that you worked so hard for - you know, blood, sweat and tears," he said. "These are earned. They only make so many. There's nothing you can do with them; just return them."

Taylor said the reason they were in his car in the first place was because he was going to speak at a school earlier this week, and had left them in the car after engagement was canceled due to the weather.

Taylor competed in his first Olympic games in Athens in 2004, when he was 21 years old. In total, he competed in four Olympic Games and brought home five medals - four gold and one silver.
