(WXIA) -- NBC News announced Tuesday longtime broadcaster Tom Brokaw has been diagnosed with cancer. Brokaw has worked at NBC News since 1966.

He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow, at the Mayo Clinic in August. Brokaw said he remains, "the luckiest guy I know." His doctor are optimistic about the outcome of the treatment he's receiving.

Through that treatment, Brokaw has continued to work on NBC News projects, including some that will air as part of the network's Olympic coverage.
Brokaw also said, "I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter."
