11Alive, Gannett Foundation award grants to 17 Georgia nonprofits

Atlanta -- This year, the Networks of 11Alive, through the Gannett Foundation, have awarded grants to seventeen local area nonprofit organizations. 

WXIA-TV President and General Manager, John Deushane, "The Networks of 11Alive strive every day to celebrate the human spirit through our on air and on line properties, showcasing the amazing work being done in our community helping others. We are honored and thrilled to be able, through the Gannett Foundation, to support these local organizations that are making such a difference for all of us who call Atlanta home."

The seventeen organizations are:

Aid Atlanta-Funds were requested for Aid Atlanta's Youth HIV Outreach, ASK US-a year round youth education program which supports teens.

American Cancer Society-The national headquarters for ACS is located in Atlanta, and these funds will support the Patient Navigation program to increase cancer services to the underserved.

Atlanta Technical College-Funds received will help support the hardship Grant program at ATC to assist students in financial need pay for books and tuition.

Communities in Schools-CIS is a social services children/youth organization that has been helping students in Atlanta since 1972. Funds provided will support the CIS West End Performance Learning Center which helps struggling students to stay in school and earn their high school diploma. The program features internships, mentors and computer based curriculum and tutorial programs. 

Captain Planet Foundation-Funds were requested for education workshops in APS, Cobb and Gwinnett County for educating students and teachers on outdoor education K through 5.

Camp Horizon-Funds for both camp and year-long programs for kids in foster care, aged 8 to 11, helping them to improve their self-esteem and providing them with a safe place to be a regular kid. 

Cool Girls, Inc.-Dedicated to the self-empowerment of girls, the funds would support the life-skills program for underserved, poverty stricken young girls. Cool Girls believes that breaking down barriers and giving girls opportunities to explore and seek success can unlock the potential of every girl. 

East Lake Foundation-Funds were requested for CREW (Creating Responsible Educated Working) Teens: a year round academic support program for East Lake Teens.

Kate's Club-Funds requested to help support core program services to children facing life after the death of a parent or sibling.

Lekotek of Georgia-Funds will support programs to help developmentally disadvantaged children learn and grow with new technology. Lekotek helps special needs children develop their abilities in a positive, nurturing environment by focusing on what they can do.

Make a Wish Foundation-Funds requested to grant the wishes of Atlanta children aged one through eighteen with life-threatening medical conditions.

Midtown Assistance Center-Funds will support the Homeless Prevention Project that assists low-income working families who are in temporary financial crisis.

Our House Inc.-Funds were requested to provide homeless parents and single women counseling, case management, and guidance to overcome homelessness.

Open Hand-Funds will support hunger and food insecurity education to low income families with the goal of decreasing childhood obesity and food insecurity.

True Colors Theatre Company-Funds will support True Colors signature education program targeting at-risk youth and teens.

VOX Teen Communications-Funds will support hands on instruction and mentoring for Atlanta Teens through communications, magazines and journalism. With VOX, teens from different backgrounds-mostly minority-work with staff and volunteer mentors to create the region's only youth newspaper in print and online. 

Youth Enhancement Services-Funds will be used to support GED preparation classes for the underserved.
