DECATUR, Ga. -- A 12-year sentence was handed down Monday to a 14-year-old girl charged with the death of her 2-year-old sister Sasha Ray in November 2012.
Ty'asia Jackson will serve eight years in prison with the remainder on probation.
"This was an extremely difficult case for our office," said DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James in a statement Monday. "There are no winners in this case. We have a family that is broken emotionally beyond what many of us could comprehend. Ty'aisa and Sasha's family will forever be changed by this terrible situation."
Jackson will serve the early years of her sentence in a youth detention facility, but when she turns 17, she will be transferred to an adult prison.
