BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) -- Officials say a wildfire burning in the Big Sur region of central California is now 88 percent contained.

Mark Nunez, the incident commander in charge of battling the blaze, updated the containment figure in a statement Friday night.

According to Nunez, the 1 1/2-square-mile fire has destroyed 22 buildings. Fourteen of those were homes.

Scattered rain Friday morning helped more than 1,000 firefighters in their efforts to calm the fire.

Big Sur features miles of rugged coast, cliffs and wilderness. The popular tourist destination about 150 miles south of San Francisco has high-end resorts and beautiful views of the ocean.

A wildfire so late in the season there is unusual, but conditions are particularly dry this year.
