Jonesboro Police say it's the worst case of hoarding they've ever seen -- an elderly couple in failing health living in squalor and filth. And police are blasting the state for not stepping in to help.
Officer Cornell Madison says he responded to the house on Wayne Avenue after a neighbor expressed concern for the couple's wellbeing.
Officer Madison says he found trash piled several feet high inside the house.
"There was trash everywhere," Officer Madison said. "And human feces."
Officer Madison says the unsanitary conditions coupled with the homeowners' health issues made it an untenable situation. So, he contacted the state department of adult protective services.
However, police say they were troubled and frustrated by the state agency's lackluster response to their concerns.
"They told us they weren't equipped to handle a situation like this," Officer Madison said. Madison says the state promised to send a caseworker by the home but at present did not have a plan to move the couple to a safer, cleaner and more stable living situation.
