ISLETON, Calif. -- Television reception can be tricky out on the water. That's why James Terry rented a movie to watch while he was on his boat in Isleton, but what he got was the last thing he expected.

Terry thought he was renting Smurfs 2 from the Redbox machine at a Stockton Walmart.

"Only reason I watch Smurfs 2, man, is cause I was bored and nothing else on there," Terry explained.

So you can imagine his surprise when he found porn on the DVD.

"I was thinking Smurfs was coming on," Terry said. "I'm like, 'man, they got some interesting marketing going on here,' you know? I'm like, 'what is this, like what the heck?'"

Terry can understand why people might find this funny, but there's also a serious side to it.

"It only takes one time for a kid to see this stuff, and it's going to be somewhat traumatic for them."

A Redbox customer service supervisor said they don't endorse or carry pornography, but if someone alters a disc and returns it, that's out of their control. Redbox said it does happen from time to time, and their legal department will investigate.

Terry said the company offered him 10 free rentals for his trouble, but he said that's hardly the point.

"It's a lack of trust, number one. It's a waste of my time, number two. And it's definitely an issue if this can get into kids' hands," Terry said. "I think if anything I would want is just to say, 'hey parents, before you buy a Redbox, really think about what's on that. Check it, make sure that it's not something like this.'"

Redbox said they will try to track down who had the disc last; the person responsible could face fraud charges.
