(WXIA) -- Adam Sandler is the most overpaid actor in Hollywood, according to a new ranking from Forbes.
Every year, the finance magazine compiles a list of the most overpaid movie stars by calculating a return on investment number for the actors in their three most recent films.

Sandler tops the list because he demands upward of $15 million per film, yet his last two offerings -- Jack & Jill and That's My Boy -- were not financial successes for movie studios.
"We estimate that for every dollar Sandler was paid on his last three movies, the films returned an average of $3.40," Forbes wrote.

Katherine Heigl is second on the list; the magazine said the former "Grey's Anatomy" star returns an investment of $3.50 for every dollar she receives.
Reese Witherspoon is third, with an average return of $3.90 for every $1 she is paid. However, according to Forbes, the Legally Blonde star has been buying the rights to popular books for her production company, meaning she may be planning to spend more time behind the camera in the future.

At No. 4, Nicolas Cage returns roughly $6 for every dollar he earns.
Last year, Kevin James appeared on Forbes' list of Best Actors for the Buck. Now he's No. 5 on a much different list. Thanks to box office flop Here Comes the Boom, James' return was about $6.10 for every dollar he was paid this year.
Denzel Washington is sixth on the list; Forbes estimated that for every dollar he received in 2013, the studios received $8.30.
"As one of Hollywood's most reliable stars, Washington can demand a large upfront paycheck," the magazine wrote. "Unfortunately, his films don't always do great at the box office."

Another newcomer to the list ranks No. 7. Former "The Office" star Steve Carell returned an average of $10 for every dollar he earned this year. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which flopped at the box office, contributed to his ranking.
Fellow former sitcom star Jennifer Aniston is eighth, bringing in about $10.60 for studios for every dollar in her paycheck. Matt Damon also returns an average of $10.60 per dollar.
In tenth place, Ryan Reynolds returns roughly $10.70 for every $1 he is paid.
"Reynolds' returns haven't been great and they're only going to get worse," Forbes said. "His summer 2013 movie R.I.P.D. was one of the biggest flops of the year but it hit theaters after our research deadline."
