WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- A high school student was shot as school was letting out for the day Wednesday afternoon at West Orange High School near Orlando.

Orange County School spokesperson Kathy Marsh told 11Alive's Orlando NBC sister station WESH that the student was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but they said the student was alert and conscious after the shooting.

School officials said the student was reportedly shot near the school bus loading area during an argument with another student.

Police brought in K9 units to help search for the suspect. Authorities described the suspect as a black male wearing a pink shirt and white shorts. WESH says the suspect was taken into custody.

The school was placed on lockdown, but buses were allowed to leave on a one-by-one basis after each bus was searched, and students on each bus were questioned by deputies.
