DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. -- Authorities have confirmed one death in a small plane crash near Dawsonville.

The incident happened around 7:10 p.m. Monday. The NTSB arrived on the scene at around 9 a.m. Tuesday to begin its investigation.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft went down on Auraria Road near Ga. 400.

Officials said there was only one person on board -- the pilot -- at the time of the crash. FAA authorities say the aircraft is registered to a "Georgia entity" but the pilot's identity has not been released at this time.

The plane was headed to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport from Morristown, N.J. Municipal Airport. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot shortly after 7 p.m.
