ATLANTA (AP) - A new chapter of College Republicans at Morehouse College is at the center of an effort by the Georgia GOP to build support among minorities.
Party officials say the group of about a dozen students will soon travel to the state's other historically black colleges and universities to drum up support for more chapters. The party also recently hired a director of minority engagement who is meeting with community groups statewide as part of a broader effort pushed by the Republican National Committee to reach minority voters who overwhelming supported Democrats in 2012.
Leo Smith started a few weeks ago and says it's not an issue of rebranding, but talking directly to voters and sharing Republican principles.
Meanwhile, Democrats say they're better positioned on the issues to draw in minority voters.
