WHITE, Ga. -- Surya Rugs is planning a 1.28 million-square-foot-facility in Bartow County, the Rome News-Tribune reports.
Karl Lutjens with Southland Engineers has filed a Development of Regional Impact document with the Northwest Regional Commission indicated that the project will affect 75 acres at 1095 Cass White Road in White.
According to the DRI submission, the project will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include 574,000 feet with 50,000 square feet of that space earmarked for office space.
An additional 711,000 square feet will be added within three years of completing the first phase, which would bring the facility to more than 1.28 million square feet under one roof, the Rome paper adds.
Documents filed with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs indicated the first phase of the project is to be finished by December 2014, with the overall project completed by December 2017, the paper said.
Indian businessman Surya Tiwari founded Surya Rugs in 1976, and brought the operations to the United States 10 years later.
Surya has facilities in Gordon County.
Kathleen Bowley, communications manager for Surya, could not say if the new facility would be a consolidation of the company's existing storage and distribution facilities or a new manufacturing center, the Rome paper reported.
