DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A 5-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a van while trick-or-treating in her neighborhood in unincorporated DeKalb County.
Halloween night, Autumn Mac had to put on her princess costume and pink boots, but her grandfather says she was already wearing a smile.
"She was just the light of my life. She would make anybody smile. That's really what caused the accident, just her being happy," said Jerry Washington.
According to DeKalb County police, Autumn ran out in front of the Dodge Caravan while trick-or-treating. Her family had just arrived in the neighborhood and were in the process of getting out of the car.
Sandra Young saw it happen. She says Autumn was going across Pepperdine Drive toward her house.
"One of the younger ones said come on, we've got some candy over here. And her mother said hold on, wait a minute, there's a car. She didn't hear that," recounted Young.
And Young's sister, Beatrice Gray, didn't see Autumn. Young dropped her candy and ran to help. She says Autumn didn't say a word, but everyone had in their hearts, she would be alright.
"She smiled at her mother a couple of times, that's when we got the news late last night that she had passed it was just devastating to us," said Young.
Young says her sister had just finished walking the same streets with her five year old grand-daughter, when they got into the car and began to pull away.
"She's not doing good at all. It's hard for her," said Young.
Authorities say speed, alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident. Police don't expect to file charges, and Autumn's family says they're not angry.
"The driver wasn't going fast at all, it was just one of those unfortunate things," said Washington.
But they are heartbroken, even her older brother, who has yet to understand.
"He hasn't really grasped it, he's just full of questions. He just wants to know why his sister is not coming home," said Washington.
