CUMMING, Ga. -- Marvin Efren Sandoval, 37, of Cumming has pleaded guilty to practicing dentistry without a license out of his home, reports Forsyth News.
Sandoval was arrested in January after Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies found a dental practice set up in a home, complete with dental chair, X-ray machine and other equipment.
Sandoval, who speaks only Spanish, explained through an interpreter that he had been a trained and licensed dentist in his native Guatemala, the paper reports.
According to the Forsyth paper, Sandoval's attorney, Nolan Hamer, said the illegal immigrant could make much more money in America than in impoverished Guatemala.
Sandoval received a negotiated sentence of three years on probation, 120 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine from Forsyth County Superior Court Judge Philip Smith.
The paper notes that the local court can't rule on federal immigration laws, but a guilty plea could affect Sandoval's status in the U.S., according Smith.
