Mableton man sentenced for killing girlfriend

MABLETON, Ga. -- A Mableton man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his live-in girlfriend last year.

Thomas "Tootsie Roll" Schwartz admitted in court Monday to shooting 45-year-old Janice Oates in the head in their Mable Street home on July 7, 2012.

Schwartz, 47, was arrested shortly after the killing and has been in jail ever since.

Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said Schwartz pleaded guilty to reduced charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. A firearm possession charge was dropped.

Schwartz was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the manslaughter charge followed by an additional 20 years on the assault charge.
