SMYRNA, Ga. -- Former City of Smyrna jailer Dustin Otwill was sentenced to 10 years in jail after stealing money from an inmate on Wednesday afternoon.
According to an investigation conducted by District Attorney's office, Otwell was arrested after an investigation found that he had taken $600 from an inmate.
Reportedly, Otwell altered the man's property sheets to hide the theft and he initially tried to blame the officer who had arrested the man. The former jailer was charged with theft by taking, making false statements and writing.
At the time of his arrest, Otwell had been employed with the jail for less than six months. He has to serve, at least, two years of his sentence.
