GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A man of Gainesville was arrested Monday and faces multiple charges for crimes in the area.

Deputies went to the area of Atlanta Highway and Frederick Street in Gainesville around 5:30 p.m.

On Thursday, September 5, deputies of the Hall County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from a cab driver, who said a passenger had pretended to be an officer during a ride.

The cab driver told them he had picked up a man in the Willow Ridge subdivision.

According to Sheriff Gerald Couch, the man showed a badge and claimed to be a police officer. He then got into the cab, along with a handgun, ammunition and laptop computer.

The cab driver said the man ordered him to take him wherever he was told and to not ask any questions. The driver told deputies he felt something was wrong, and made up a story about needing to return the car to the cab company's office.

From the office, the driver called 911. During the phone call, the man left the cab and left his items behind. The cab driver slowly followed and kept track of him, so deputies were able to make the arrest.

Investigators learned that the badge belonged to a security officer, and that officers were investigating a burglary near Willow Ridge.

Shortly after, investigators identified the suspect as 21-year-old Carlos Ildefonso Lopez. He was arrested and taken to the Hall County Jail.

Lopez has been charged with impersonating an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and first degree burglary. He is held with no bond, and scheduled for a committal hearing on September 20.
