MARIETTA, Ga. -- After six months away from their families serving in Afghanistan, the men and women of the 283rd Combat Communications Squadron were honored for their service Saturday.  Four of them were awared the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone.

"It feels great to be recognized for the work that was done," said Master Sergeant Obadiah Herndon.

They set up telephone and radio communications for more than 5000 troops in Afghanistan.  They made sure weapons systems ran smoothly along with base operations and air drops.  And some of the same technology that kept the war machine running helped manage the peace back home.

"Now with Skype and the newer technology it makes it a lot easier than what it was back in the old days when you couldn't call back home," said Senior Master Sergeant Donavon Hale.
