POWDER SPRINGS, GA. -- Powder Springs Elementary School was placed on lockdown due to a nearby shooting on Tuesday afternoon.
Cobb County police received calls of shots fired around 12:30 p.m. in the neighborhood next to the school.
According to a release from Cobb County Schools, kids and teachers on the playground heard what sounded like gunshots from woods. Cobb School PIO Jay Dillion says the teacher took kids inside until authorities concluded their investigation.
Cobb County officers found a male suspect running in the neighborhood upon response and placed him under arrest. The suspect had drugs on his person at the time of his arrest.
Authorities think the suspect was running for someone else who shot at him. During the investigation, officer combed the wooded area near the scene and were unable to find a gun.
