COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- Officials in Columbus say two contractors who were trapped in a construction trench have died.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says 50-year-old James Jackson and 64-year-old Allen Thomas died Monday.
Fire Marshall Chief Ricky Shores says the men were trapped nearly halfway down into the 30-foot trench, and a 20-man rescue team was trying to pull them to safety Monday afternoon.
Shores says trench collapses are typically linked to the type of soil, soil compaction and the integrity of retaining walls.
Officials say the men were helping to build a new phase at an apartment complex. It's unclear how the men became trapped in the trench.
