ATLANTA (AP) - Wednesday is the deadline for those interested in running to be the next chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia.
Four candidates have so far submitted paperwork. They are former House Minority Leader Dubose Porter of Dublin, former state Sens. Doug Stoner of Cobb County and Mary Squires of Atlanta and Rockdale County Tax Commissioner RJ Hadley.
Meanwhile, Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson tells The Associated Press he's decided not to run to focus on continuing to build his practice with McKenna, Long & Aldridge. Johnson, who led President Barack Obama's re-election efforts in the South, serves as managing director at the firm.
In June, Mike Berlon stepped down as chair, citing personal issues.
About 300 members of the party's state committee will meet Aug. 31 to select the next chair.
