MARIETTA, Ga. -- She is one of the most famous names in U.S. track and field. Now Lolo Jones will be going on a date with a Georgia State college student ... who asked her out on Twitter.

"This could have gone very bad for me," said Harry "Bubby" Lyles, Jr. of Marietta.

Last year, around this time, Lyles was an intern at 11Alive and had a common thought about Jones when watching the Olympics.

"I was like, 'Lolo's a pretty good-looking girl there,'" Lyles said.

Eleven months later, Lyles decided to ask Jones on a date. He aimed to do it through social media.

Said Lyles, "I Tweeted her, 'If I get 150,000 re-Tweets, you gotta let me take you out on a date.'"

It perhaps seemed harmless -- cute, even. But then, Jones responded.

And the quest was on.

"The notifications were coming in like crazy," Lyles said. "My phone actually crashed three times."

Within two weeks, Bubby got his 150-thousand re-Tweets -- an achievement that shocked his newest paramour.

"I should have asked two questions," Jones said in an interview with flotrack.org. "Like, 'Hey, are you legal?'"

Lyles is 21 years old.

Jones also wondered who would pay for the date -- "because I like to eat," she joked.

Lyles says he would like to pay.

"As a gentleman, that's something we should absolutely do all the time," he told 11Alive's Matt Pearl. "So I would definitely like to pay."

Lyles and Jones have exchanged messages and are now planning to have the date in her town of Baton Rouge, La.

And how does Lyles plan on securing Date #2?

"I think if I just be myself and be genuine, I'll be all right."
