ATLANTA -- Uber Atlanta has launched a new way to ride around Atlanta, and the company is offering a special discount to first-time riders.
Atlantans have many modes of transportation to choose from, whether it be driving their own vehicle, calling a cab, riding MARTA or carpooling.
Uber offers a different approach, where riders can use an app to score a ride. It's a way of bringing taxis into the 21st century through technology.
Uber Atlanta General Manager Keith Radford said there is now a new service, uberX, which is the same quality of their black car service, but typically uses a smaller vehicle and a lower rate.
UberX customers can use their smartphone,, Radford said, which the company feels is much better than hailing a cab.
The app locates where the customer is, and automatically sends a cab in a very short time. Plus, the user will get a text message that tells who their driver will be and how long the wait is. The app securely has the customer's credit card on file, so no cash is needed, even for tips.
To help launch uberX, Radford is giving customers a $20 discount off their first ride with uberX, which is good until December 31. All riders need to get $20 off their ride is the special discount code: NBCuberX.
