Chris Salzer (R) tries to reason with armed robber (L)
LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga -- Douglas County Sheriff investigators are looking for a man who tried to rob a Dollar General store at gunpoint, but had a change of heart and walked away. They credit the manager of the South Sweetwater Road store in Lithia Springs for talking him out of the robbery.
Chris Salzer and two of his employees were standing outside the store last Saturday waiting to open when a man approached them from behind the building. "When I saw him with shades on, dark hat, a hoodie and with his hand on a gun and I hear it cocked, I knew he wasn't just walking by," Salzer said. "He comes up behind us, stays about three feet behind us and says 'you all get inside, get inside, let's go,'" Salzer said.
Salzer said his two employees walked inside the store and he lagged behind. "And as I'm walking I'm thinking in my head, okay, what's the best thing to do in this situation," he said. "I'm there thinking, God, please help me."
The store's surveillance cameras captured what happened next. Salzer stopped at the door and started talking to the suspect, trying to make eye contact with him. "I said you don't want to do this and I said it three times," he said.
"Then he looks at me and he has his hand on the gun and he goes 'All right, I got you," Salzer said. He said the suspect turned and walked away behind the store.
"I honestly believe there is goodness in everybody," Salzer said. "I just wanted to look him in the eyes and say please don't to this."
Salzer said he is still shaken up from what happened and so are his two employees who consider him a hero.
The Douglas County Sheriff Office still wants to know who the gunman is. They're asking anyone with information to call the Douglas County Sheriff Office at 770-949-5656.
