ATLANTA, Ga. -- Authorities have identified the man killed in a shooting near the Atlanta University Center on Thursday as 23-year-old Morehouse student, Joseph Gibbs.
Morehouse President John Wilson responded to the event with a letter to students on Friday. In the letter, Wilson said that he would do more to ensure the safety of Morehouse students and work to find new ways to address the problem of crime in the area.
On Thursday, authorities discovered a motor vehicle accident and observed that the driver of one of the vehicles had been shot multiple times. The driver, Gibbs, was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger in the car sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to Grady Memorial in stable condition.
Witnesses say a third occupant fled the scene and may have possibly been injured during the shooting.
The shooting happened near Parsons Street and Webster Street. Officials say a suspect approached the victims and opened fire before fleeing the scene in another vehicle.
No word on the cause of the shooting. Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
