SARDIS, Ga. -- Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of an ex-police officer at a police station in eastern Georgia.
Officials say 34-year-old Dwayne Burke, a former Sardis police officer, was killed Monday morning after breaking into an evidence room at the department about 50 miles southeast of Augusta.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent Pat Morgan said Burke was armed with an axe and was confronted by another officer.
Authorities say Burke left the department in 2009 and was investigated by the GBI for allegedly taking and transmitting nude photos of himself in the department's restroom.
He was later arrested on terroristic threat charges and was arrested in 2010 when police found guns and drugs his car. In 2012, Burke was arrested in a burglary involving $16,000 of jewelry.
