ATLANTA -- The eruption in the city council chambers came from scores of employees and other backers of Atlanta's adult entertainment industry, which had just beaten an ordinance that would have put them out of business on Cheshire Bridge Rd.

"Thank you Jesus. Now I can send my kid to college," said one woman, who identified herself as an employee at Club Onyx.

The city council had rejected an ordinance by councilman Alex Wan, who wanted to change the business character of Cheshire Bridge Rd. by giving a half dozen or so strip clubs and adult oriented businesses five years to relocate. Wan told council members that voting no would allow "six or seven businesses to dictate" the corridor's character.

But most of the city council was skeptical. Some said the approach targeting Cheshire Bridge seemed to overlook problem businesses elsewhere in the city.

When the vote came, the strip clubs won the round-council members rejected Wan's measure by a nine to six vote.

"I think the signal is that you can't legislate morality," said David Morrison, owner of an adult store called Inserection.
