Georgia Dome, home of the Atlanta Falcons

ATLANTA -- Tuesday, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority will vote on whether to give the Atlanta Falcons the go-ahead to survey property for a new stadium.

The survey would take place after the state and city choose a site.  They have focused their efforts on a site south of the Georgia Dome, coveted by government officials for its proximity to a MARTA line.  Mt. Vernon Baptist church occupies part of that site currently.  State officials have had ongoing talks with Mt. Vernon leaders about selling the property.

Purchase negotiations continue with a second church.  The city has given financial "parameters" of an expected offer to Friendship Baptist Church.  Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the church's board of trustees, says "talks have been very positive," and "we expect things to move very quickly" once a firm purchase price is offered.

The city would need Friendship's property in order to re-route Martin Luther King Jr. Drive around the footprint of the new stadium.
