MACON, Ga. -- Police say a 5-year-old girl has died after being hit by a school bus in Macon.
Macon Police Crime Lab Sgt. Melanie Hofmann says Tamiya Watson was hit by the rear tire of a school bus Monday. Witnesses told investigators Watson had her back turned to the bus and was talking when she walked into the side of the bus.
Hoffmann says the bus was making a left turn and ran over Watson's torso after she fell to the ground.
Bibb County Schools spokeswoman Stephanie Hartley said Watson was a student at Barden Elementary School and was being treated in the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Hartley says the district's crisis support team will visit the girl's school Tuesday to support students and staff.
