CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Southbound traffic on Interstate 575 was blocked for two hours Sunday morning after a man held police at bay near the Sixes Road overpass.
Holly Springs Police said 30-year-old James Allen Woods Jr. parked a car on the side of the interstate and walked along the highway with a gun to his head while wearing a bulletproof vest. Several calls came in to 911.
"He wasn't pointing it at anyone else, but any time you've got somebody with a gun that's obviously in a state of mind where they're walking up and down the interstate with a gun to their head, you're concerned about that," said Lt. Tanya Smith of Holly Springs Police Department.
Smith said Woods had a criminal record and military gear in his trunk, and walked to the edge of the woods by the highway while negotiators with the Cherokee County Sheriff's office tried to stop him from hurting himself.
He ended his own life at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. No one else was hurt.
Counting Sunday's standoff, three local highways have had deadly tragedies happen during travel within the last four days. Late Friday night, a perpetrator was shot after a pursuit on GA 400. Earlier in the week, the driver of a Maybach was shot and killed on Interstate 20.
