ATLANTA -- Governor Nathan Deal signed a House Bill 487 on Wednesday, changing oversight of video poker machines to the Georgia Lottery Corp.

By moving away from the Georgia Department of Revenue, some proceeds from video poker machine and other coin-operated machines will now be given to the HOPE scholarship program.

Under the new bill, 5 percent of net receipts will be given to the organization, reaching a maximum of 10 percent over time.

Anti-gambling groups had opposed the bill; however, supporters were in favor of its goal: to crack down on illegal gambling my making it easier to identify rogue machines.

The machines provide non-cash prizes, such as merchandise and vouchers.
