ATLANTA, Ga. -- A Clayton County man was shot by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in southeast Atlanta on Thursday.
According to Atlanta Police, the officer initiated a traffic stop near 3800 Jonesboro Road at around 5 p.m. on a vehicle that fit the description of one which was involved in an serious of recent armed robberies.
Authorities say the driver attempted to flee that traffic stop and was subsequently shot in the face by an officer.
After the shooting, the driver switched vehicles and was transported to South Fulton Medical and later to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Will Otis King III. King had outstanding warrants for cruelty to children and a probation violation on weapons charges out of Clayton County.
The incident is under investigation by the Homicide Unit and the Office of Professional Standards.
