TUCKER, Ga. -- YOUNG PEOPLE MATTER is a shelter for homeless youngsters with no place to go, no home and no love.

However, before they opened the door on their new facility, thieves cleaned the place out taking kitchen appliances, copper wiring and piping.

But that was not all.

"They broke windows and one of the most unfortunate things that happened was that when they took out the pipes in the bathrooms, it flooded the place," said Simone Joye, Executive Director of Young People Matter.

The vandalism has been a big setback, but the Shelter still plans to open the first week in May. It will house 20 homeless youngsters, each for up to 21 days.

DeKalb County police are investigating the break-in but so far say they have no arrests.

"We help young people who have no place to go, kids kicked out of their homes, runaways, and kids the State will not take into custody," Joye said.

"I really have a passion that no kid can be in the street. I don't care what type of child they are," Joye added.

But to open on time, Joye stresses the urgent need for kitchen appliances, and paint.

The Help Desk set out to spark the effort.

We contacted Home Depot. Without hesitation they gave YOUNG PEOPLE MATTER a much needed refrigerator and added money for paint.

"That's beautiful. That's wonderful. We are so happy," Joye said.

A full list of the Shelter's needs can be found on the YOUNG PEOPLE MATTER website.
