AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County sheriff's officials say they were sent to break up crowds that formed outside an Augusta grocery store to take merchandise that was set outside during an eviction.

Authorities say between 200 and 300 people were in the parking lot at Laney Supermarket after hearing county officials were evicting the store from the building.

Officials say people became angry when they were told they could not take away food and other goods that had been piled up outside.

Authorities say onlookers held empty grocery bags as workers scooped up food and other merchandise that was thrown into nearby trash bins destined for the county landfill.

Richmond County Chief Deputy Teresa Russell says the landlord, SunTrust Bank, paid to have merchandise hauled away.
