ATLANTA, Ga. -- After more than six years of complaints, the abandoned La Barcelona apartment complex on Anderson Avenue was finally torn town to cheers Monday. The complex in Northwest Atlanta was the latest to be demolished as a part of a concerted effort by the city that started last June.
The Atlanta Police Department's Code Enforcement Division is in charge of the demolition program. Here is a look at the number of demolished properties and the growing list of those to come:
- 43 structures have been demolished so far, another 78 have been cleaned and closed.
- 171 demolitions are pending, including 5 apartment complexes.
- Over 500 are being considered for demolition
Mayor Kasim Reed told 11Alive all parts of the city are being taken care of.
"We're taking a city-wide approach, we have to love every single part of Atlanta, and so that's what we're trying to do through this demolition process," Reed said.
