Atlanta, Chicago tie for 7th worst commute

ATLANTA -- Atlanta and Chicago tied for seventh-worst commute in the nation in 2011, according to a new study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

The worst commute in the country was found in Washington, D.C., where auto commuters were delayed 67 hours on the road.

In Atlanta, the study says, traffic caused drivers to spend an extra 51 hours behind the wheel.

The Top 10 worst commutes, according to the study, are:

1. Washington, D.C.: 67 hours

2. San Francisco-Oakland and Los Angeles (tie): 61 hours

4. New York-Newark: 59 hours

5. Boston: 53 hours

6. Houston: 52 hours

7. Atlanta and Chicago (tie): 51 hours

9. Philadelphia and Seattle (tie): 48 hours
